Shoot Positioning

Rows and rows of grapes, growing so fast you can almost hear them pushing up to the sun.  The fruit is set and we are having another magnificent year.  Rain just at the critical time, now the sun, heat and humidity. The vines beginning to mature their bounty.  With all the rain, we have to stay ahead of the mold.  One of the best ways to do that is through shoot thinning and positioning.  When we are done with a row it is nice to look back and see everything fastened and secure like in the picture below.

Before we start the thinning and positioning, the rows are growing all over the place.  The wind and rain has made a mess of the vines and it takes a lot of sweat and hard work to get things straightened out.  When we are done, we start right back at the beginning and begin dropping fruit.  The payoff for all the hard work comes at the end in the form of healthy fruit and vines.
